No. 208

The Old St Beghian
  January 2026

From Our President

Darryl Davies (FS 62-68)

I have now completed eighteen months as President of the Society and found the time most rewarding. I have attended a number of OSB functions in that period, including a gathering at Grange Golf Club, which it is hoped will be held every two years, next time in September 2026. Over the years I attended many North East Branch dinners and more recently lunches. It is sad that one did not take place this year, and unless someone is willing to take the reins it will become moribund. I enjoyed my trip down to London for an excellent London Dinner at the Civil Service club, but was unable to make the London Social gathering at the Samuel Pepys, however David Paul kindly stepped in on my behalf. The Cumbria dinner at Armathwaite Hall continues to go from strength to strength. In February 2025 we had ninety eight guests in attendance and I am hopeful of a similar number in 2026. Make a note in your diary and get booked up straight away (Friday 27th Feb 2026).

I recently formed a group which has had two meetings at the Melbreak Hotel in Workington and is now known as the Melbreak group. It is made up of OSBs of different ages who are willing to come along to explore new ideas and ways forward for the Society. We have received a number of suggestions, some of which we are currently implementing. As a Society, as well as being on Facebook, we are now on Instagram, which was suggested as a way of interacting with younger OSBs. We are also now publishing a Newsletter twice a year, in spring and autumn. You should all have received two of these publications to date and any comments would be much appreciated. We are of course continuing with the Bulletin, our formal publication of record, too. The next meeting of the Melbreak group will be in March 2026 and if you would like to join us, you would be more than welcome. If you can’t make it, but have any ideas, do let us know.

St Beghians’ Day in 2026 is on June 6th. Do join us if you can. It was well attended last year, despite the weather! This year, after the formalities in the morning, there will be lunch in the Foundation dining room and music in the quad accompanied by a cream tea.

My time as President of the Society ends on OSB Day this year and I need to find a successor. If anyone is interested, please let me know. There is also a vacancy for a Deputy President, whose role is to support the President. That person would have the choice of eventually becoming the President if it was his or her wish. We also have four Committee Member vacancies and would be pleased to hear from you if you are willing to join us.

These past eighteen months have gone so quickly and I should like to thank you all for your support. It has been an honour and a privilege to be your President.

Darryl W Davies.
